The plant uses 8.3MW turbines from MHI Vestas and was built after Vattenfall won a 2015 competitive tender with what at the time was as record-low price for offshore wind output.

Horns Rev 3 is soon set to be outstripped by the 600MW Kriegers Flak project, also being developed by Vattenfall and due to enter service in the Danish Baltic Sea in 2021.

Denmark is currently planning three further 800MW offshore wind projects under the scope of its 2018 Energy Agreement.

The first of those, in the North Sea and called Thor , will go out for tender this year and is due in service by 2027.
